Federal government opens claims process for survivors of abuse at Indian hospitals

The federal government has opened up a claims period for those who were harmed at segregated health facilities known as Indian hospitals — though an N.W.T. elder warns that recalling painful details from the past could be difficult for some survivors.

There were about 33 federal Indian hospitals that operated between 1936 and 1981.

Following a court-approved settlement in June 2025, the government is now compensating victims who were harmed at one of these hospitals.
